High Society got
together at coffee after a San Diego Chorus rehearsal, and sang through
anything and everything they knew. They were so taken by the sound they
heard that they got together the following week and Voila!, High Society
was born.
Joni Bescos agreed to work with them and taught them the proper use of
vocal mechanisms, breath support, and barbershop technique. In 1975,
they won their first honor, Region 11 Quartet Champions, and took
Seattle by storm that year, placing 4th in their first International
Quartet competition. Sadly, Joni had to step down as Mother, Mentor, and
Best Friend, so Bill and Carolyn Butler were signed on to finish the
job! It worked, and High Society won the 1976 International Quartet
Championship in Cincinnati
Ohio.
When Tenor Bette Roberts had to leave the quartet, Connie Noble was
invited to leave the cold and snow of Ohio and take up residence within
High Society and in San Diego. With a show in Calgary the week she
moved, Connie had no "break-in" period, but it wasn't needed. She fit
like a glove, and this very busy, very popular quartet continued to
entertain around the world, including a 7-week USO tour of The Azores
and Germany, a memorable experience for all.
They are each very busy women, strong singers, and involved Sweet
Adelines. Music is foremost in all of their lives, and sharing it with
other singers and listeners has been a gratifying experience for all.
We hope our new 2 CD set will define what it is that has made High
Society one of the benchmark quartets of Sweet Adelines International.
